Extending your Alberta Health Plan

Extending your Alberta Health Plan

The Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) offers basic medical benefits to all eligible residents. This means, as an Alberta resident and AHCIP recipient, you’re covered for:

  • Routine examinations by your physician
  • General emergency surgeries
  • Emergency dental and oral surgeries
  • Essential in-hospital care
  • Diagnostic services (e.g. x-rays, lab tests, result interpretation)
  • Standard room hospital accommodation

These services must, of course, be administered within the province to be eligible for coverage under AHCIP.

Just to name a few, the AHCIP program won’t cover:
  • Prescription drugs (unless prescribed and administered in-hospital)
  • Routine dental services
  • Prescription eyewear
  • Registered specialists and therapists (like chiropractors, registered massage therapists)
  • Emergency medical expenses when traveling abroad
