The Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) offers basic medical benefits to all eligible residents. This means, as an Alberta resident and AHCIP recipient, you’re covered for:
- Routine examinations by your physician
- General emergency surgeries
- Emergency dental and oral surgeries
- Essential in-hospital care
- Diagnostic services (e.g. x-rays, lab tests, result interpretation)
- Standard room hospital accommodation
These services must, of course, be administered within the province to be eligible for coverage under AHCIP.
Just to name a few, the AHCIP program won’t cover:
- Prescription drugs (unless prescribed and administered in-hospital)
- Routine dental services
- Prescription eyewear
- Registered specialists and therapists (like chiropractors, registered massage therapists)
- Emergency medical expenses when traveling abroad
