Supplemental Dental Insurance Plans

Having supplemental dental insurance can really ease the cost of regular checkups, cleanings, repairs, and extensive dental procedures. When it comes to maintaining your oral health without any financial coverage, you really do put your money where your mouth is!

What your province doesn't cover

Under Canada's government health care system, routine dental care is not covered. Though a few provinces offer prevention programs for children (Quebec and Nova Scotia, for instance), others only pay for medically-essential dental procedures performed in-hospital. Therefore, you're probably not covered for:

  • Routine dental check-ups
  • Preventive and restorative dental care
  • Cavity fillings
  • Dental implants
  • Dentures
  • Inlays, veneers, crowns and bridges
  • X-rays
  • Orthodontics

How to fill the gap

You can purchase a supplemental dental insurance plan through a number of private health benefits providers. You’ll be especially interested in having your own dental insurance plan if you:

  • have no dental coverage through employee benefits at work, or
  • are retiring and losing your group health coverage at work, or
  • are self-employed, working on contract or freelance.

While supplemental dental insurance plans are ideal for individuals, they are even more important for families with lots of mouths to maintain!
